The expansion difference is the relative thermal growth between the shaft and the machine housing. During the start-up and shutdown of the steam turbine, due to the difference in metal materials, thermal expansion coefficient, and heat dissipation, the shaft thermal expansion may exceed the shell expansion. If the shaft thermal expansion exceeds the allowable clearance specified in the machine, friction will be generated. At high speeds, friction can cause catastrophic damage. The expansion monitor is specially designed for large turbo-generator set. With the help of monitoring expansion, necessary alarm or stop measures can be taken before friction occurs.
